The first air conditioned skis to roll out of the new Toronto International Airport (TIA) are expected to arrive in time for the winter, after months of delays caused by the construction of the TIA’s new runway.
The air conditioned resorts, set to open in late January or early February, will include the air conditioned hotels, which are expected be much more comfortable than the hotel versions.
The resorts are also expected to feature an ice rink.
The resorts are expected come in two flavours, according to TIA President and CEO Paul Moulton: The hotels will offer a “sports-oriented” atmosphere, and the air conditioning will be used to help the resorts “be a little more comfortable for people coming from outside the airport”.
Moulton told CBC News the resorts would be designed in such a way that they can accommodate a lot of people, as well as have an “unparalleled amount of natural light” in the summertime.
“We’re going to be able to operate on a day-to-day basis.
It’s a lot more comfortable,” he said.
Moultons comments came as he announced that he expects to be officially opening the resorts at the end of February.
The TIA opened the first of its new runways in December 2017.
The airport had originally planned to open its first ski resort in 2019, but Moultons decision to wait a year and build the ski resort was a compromise with the TMA’s long-term goal of a ski resort by 2025.
The TAA’s first resort in the city, called Ski Park, opened last summer, and has been hailed as a major step forward in the airport’s development, and an example of what the TAA hopes will be a growing ski industry.
